Sorry if this isn't the correct place to post this (I'm new here), but I'm micing my drums. I have everything (overheads, hihat, toms, bass) except a snare mic. Anyone know a good snare mic for over the drum? And do I need a stand or is it a clip on?

Thanks, in advance.

The tried and true industry standard snare mic is the Shure SM-57. They can be had for around $100, and believe me, it is by far the best mic you can buy for $100. It is happiest with a good preamp though, so make sure you have at least 55-60 db.

You will need a stand, although there are some clip adapters for either your hardware or the rim of your drum.

Just out of curiosity, what are your overheads and other mics?

Thanks so much...It sounds amazing.

My hat mic is a MXL 991 (AMAZING quality for low price), and I also have the Digital Reference DR-DRM7 7-Piece Drum Mic Kit with 4 DR-STX1 tom mics, 2 DR-HX1 condenser mics (my overheads), and 1 DR-KX1 kick drum mic. I was skeptical when I bought it because the price is so low, but honestly, it has a $1000 sound for only $200 dollars.

The toms are crisp, overheads are amazing, bass was okay (but I set up all of the EQ's etc. to make it sound good).

Thanks again

I have an MXL 440 - don't use it a whole lot, but it is an ok mic for being relatively inexpensive. Digital Reference is actually a pretty good brand for the money. I've never used one, but from what you say they seem to be a good buy.

Yeah, with an SM-57, your set should sound great. You should upload a sample of your kit miked and eq'd sometime.

Cheers

Spenca, would love to hear the kit! Would love to hear the different microphones you are using, etc.

PS - Welcome to the board!

The CAD mic packages seem to be pretty good. . . there is also a deal floating around for 3 Shure Sm-57s and a Beta-52. That looks like a great deal - comes with the clips, too.

Price range - type - brand? Might be able to give you some feedback on what I've used in the past. . .

Price range would be $200.00/$300.00 american.. In the past we have used Shure/Sennheiser..Vocal and Equip. Mic's several different models..maybe one or two instrument mic's for acoustic guitar or maybe something else.. general stuff for us..

Oh, and are these for live sound or studio recording?

For live, you still can't do much better than the Shure SM58 for vocals - and they're only $100...

For studio, (for both acoustic guitar and vocals) I love the Audio Technica 4040 (about $300).

If you prefer a smaller acoustic guitar mic, I really like the Rode M3 Condensers in an x/y pattern on the 12th fret. (They're about $200 a piece).
