Good ideas about the stick twirling guys, but let's keep the thread on topic, please smile

So, does anyone else have thoughts, questions, or comments about giving drum lessons?

Umm yeah.
I personally think that having drum lessons is a great way to get new ideas and keep yourself fresh.
I have had drum lessons since the day i started drumming, and i havent looked back.
These days, its more about bouncing ideas off my teacher, and learning new, more advanced stuff.

That's the spirit, jack. . . Do you find that you can learn independently of your teacher? As I got more advanced, my instructor was almost a mentor or coach more than a "teacher".

Yeah, got a bit west of topic there, but I still say it's a solid "exercise", which fits in with drum lessons. After all, what are lessons without exercising them? And what's the point if you don't exercise the lessons you get? {That's my main buried point}. wink

Yeah, MJS, you hit it on the head.

i happen to have a really skilled teacher, so he is constantly helping me with my reading, time signature stuff and he corrects my technique defects.
Sometimes, its just great to talk to him and ask about some drummers to research or bands to look at.

Im still independantly learning, but at the same time, he can be more of a coach, or an experienced friend rather than a teacher.

And yeah, Tam, i understand what you mean with the stick twirling exercise which i could definately look at as a particular skill to learn, which is all drums is i guess...
a series of skills we must learn, and combine to create our own, independant soud and style.

This would come under the umbrella of teaching drums.
cool

Breathe

Relax

Your Focus (The Stick)
Your connection with the drum. (You really don't play drums, you play sticks and you learn to wheel them like Arthur wheeled Excalibur.

You're a Drummer, It's the only instrument that they hand you sticks and say "Here, Hit Something" and we work at getting good at it.

And on a side note:

Most "Drummer Jokes" are usually true about the Bass Player not the drummer.

All very true, BattEry. . . wink
I've never heard the analogy about a knight wielding a sword = a drummer wielding the sticks, but its a good one.
