Yeah, MJS, you hit it on the head.
i happen to have a really skilled teacher, so he is constantly helping me with my reading, time signature stuff and he corrects my technique defects. Sometimes, its just great to talk to him and ask about some drummers to research or bands to look at.
Im still independantly learning, but at the same time, he can be more of a coach, or an experienced friend rather than a teacher.

And yeah, Tam, i understand what you mean with the stick twirling exercise which i could definately look at as a particular skill to learn, which is all drums is i guess... a series of skills we must learn, and combine to create our own, independant soud and style. This would come under the umbrella of teaching drums.
