I use match grip when playing rock and funk and traditional grip with jazz or blues. Depends on the individual . I tell my students what ever feels the best for you . For speed I would suggest traditional for those heavy hitters match grip

Matched Grip or Traditional Rock Grip works best for me..Cant seem to hang onto the left stick the other way..

Yeah I hold mind in "american" grip. But the funny thing is I want to learn traditional but it's more comfortable for me to play traditional with my right hand, and i'm a right handed drummer.

A good friend of mine plays both ways but he also was in a marching Drum Corp. when he was younger I bet that had something to do with it..

I agree with Jack but I would like to add something as well. I believe you should get them to use both, and see which one they are comfortable with, but you should encourage them to actively use each grip. For example, depending on how he is playing, Buddy Rich will change his grip from traditional to matchgrip. Hope I could help.

Weckl is another great player who switches it up pretty frequently. . . it really is not about the grip, because you can play, to a certain extent, the exact same things with both grips.

Wasn't exactly meant as a comparison, but I can see how it could be taken that way.
